What To Demand From A Feasibility Study:
Because we have encountered so many inferior Feasibility Study Reports, we have compiled a few basic elements that you have every right to demand from your fundraising counsel when doing a study. We will not go into pricing, other than to say that if it costs much less than $15,000 or any more than perhaps $25,000 you are being duped. The cost should NOT be tied to the amount of your goal - the work is the same regardless.
You have a right to honesty, experience, integrity,
objectivity and candid analytical reflections of public perceptions of your
organization, and
You have a right to enough face-to-face (NOT
telephone!) interviews to amount to "critical mass" - that is, enough
interviews to produce self-evident and verifiable confirmation of the
availability of funds and support for the campaign (50 or more interviews
has been the industry standard for generations), and
You have a right to a comprehensive study report that
documents a solid basis for advice given regarding salient issues pre-agreed
to be tested, e.g. "Are there any competitive campaigns to threaten us?",
"Is our Board strong enough?", "Is this project needed?" etc., and it should
not be padded with reams of boilerplate from "Giving USA", and
You have a right to thoughtful, professional
recommendations, not solely based upon "opinions" (endless quotes without
attribution are useless) but backed by logic and experience regarding all
salient issues, and
You have a right to
solid evidence regarding accessibility/willingness of potential campaign
leadership - the most
important issue to be discussed in a study, and
You have a right to expect counsel to test the water on
pledges to the campaign and provide you with verifiable but unwritten
commitments for anywhere from 30% to 60% of your proposed goal, with names,
specific amounts (possible solicitors) and a cumulative total if the
recommendation is to go forward, and
You have a right to thoughtful and convincing evidence,
based upon the above, of an achievable goal for the campaign, and
You have a right to self-evident documentation as to
whether a campaign should be waged at all, and timing thereof, and
You have a right to a comprehensive, project-specific
list of strategy recommendations for a successful campaign, and
You have a right to a study result that is absent any contingency that subsequent success depends upon hiring the study-firm for the campaign.
